Volunteering
Our volunteers are crucial to the day-to-day operations, programming, and visitor experience at the
Southampton History Museum. We offer a variety of enriching, meaningful, and enlightening volunteer opportunites. There’s plenty of ways to get involved at one of Southampton’s oldest running cultural institutions! No prior experience is necessary, but a love of history and learning is essential.
All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age to participate.
Minors must have valid NYS Working Papers.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE: MUSEUM GUIDE
​
Description: We are looking for enthusiastic history lovers who are eager to learn, share, and engage with visitors. Guides lead tours for visitors and answer questions about the Museum's historic sites, exhibitions, and public programs. Guides may also help our staff with security and maintance of our historic collections, buildings, and grounds.​​​​​
Qualifications: Good communication skills. Friendly collaborative personality with a willingness to learn. No experience necessary but must be comfortable speaking in public. Guides must traverse uneven surfaces at our historic buildings and grounds. Work can be in minimally dusty areas and may at times require lifting items up to 25 lbs. Volunteers must be willing to work in this kind of environment.​

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: EDUCATOR
​
Description: We are looking for part-time educators to help our staff provide educational programs for students, youth groups, families, and adults. Our educational programming may include the following:
- Special Programs focusing on specific periods or topics in local history or cultural heritage for visiting school groups, extracurricular clubs, scouts, and other youth groups.
- Family activities or workshops, especially during the summer.
- Special lectures, tours, or workshops for those seeking an in-depth look at a particular topic, exhibition, or collection.
- Outreach Programs for local schools, libraries, and community groups (volunteers assist staff with make presentations).​
Qualifications: Good public speaking skills. Collaborative personality with a willingness to learn. Enthusiastic and energetic. Experience in teaching or interacting with the public is preferred, but not necessary. Educators must traverse uneven surfaces at our historic buildings and grounds. Work can be in minimally dusty areas and may at times require lifting items up to 25 lbs. Volunteers must be willing to work in this kind of environment.

COLLECTIONS & ARCHIVES DEPARTMENT: INTERN/ASSISTANT

Description: From whaling logs to ledger books and archaeological materials to fine and decorative art, caring for our diverse collections and archives is a vital part of our mission-based work the Southampton History Museum. We're seeking interns/assistants to help our team of experts with monitoring, cataloging, digitizing, and exhibition preparation.​
Qualifications: Collaborative personality with a willingness to learn. Enthusiastic and energetic. Interested individuals should have meticulous attention-to-detail. Previous museum or gallery experience helpful but not necessary. Collections/archives volunteers must traverse uneven surfaces at our historic buildings and grounds. Work can be in minimally dusty areas and may at times require lifting items up to 25 lbs. Volunteers must be willing to work in this kind of environment.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Description: Throughout the year the museum hosts a number of large-scale fundraiser events. We are always looking for volunteers who would like to lend a hand during these events to help our staff with guest check-in, set-up/tear-down, or other crucial elements of these exciting but intensive events.
Qualifications: Enthusiastic and energetic personality. Event volunteers must traverse uneven surfaces at our historic buildings and grounds. Work can be in minimally dusty areas and may at times require lifting items up to 50 lbs. Volunteers must be willing to work in this kind of environment.
